Yonkers, NY – November 15, 2024 – The Albanian American Educators Association (AAEA) is happy to announce the successful collaboration with Vorea, a renowned Arbrëshe cultural organization, on the release of the book, Arbrëshe Women: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow…between sacred and profane.
On November 14th, esteemed presenters from Albania, Canada, Italy, and Switzerland gathered to share captivating narratives about the daily lives of Arbrëshe women, transporting the audience back in time to a history spanning over five centuries. This event brought together members of the global Albanian diaspora, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Arbrëshe people.
The event commenced with a historical overview by Lucrezia Lindia, Brunilda Paskali and Dr. Ruki Kondaj of the Illyrian people’s settlement in over 50 Italian towns. A comprehensive introduction to the book was followed by a poignant recitation of the poem, “Gruaja Arbreshe,” by Lucia Amato-Ka Ejnina accompanied by the soothing melodies of violinist Anduena Bega. The audience was also serenaded with three historical songs performed by the talented violinist and Rosella Blaiotta, Miss Arbrëshe 2024.
Renowned fashion and costume designer Zajmira Oerazhiu from Albania provided insights into the significance of Arbrëshe costumes, highlighting their intricate details and ornate style. Lucrezia Linda provided a discussion on the Icon of the Nativity shed light on the religious aspects of Arbrëshe culture. The evening concluded with a culinary exploration by Lucia Martino, featuring a demonstration of the traditional pasta dish, Shyridhiat, and a reception showcasing a variety of homemade Arbrëshe desserts and dishes whose recipes were featured in the book.
The AAEA is grateful for the opportunity to partner with Vorea and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Arbrëshe people. By sharing these stories and traditions, we hope to inspire future generations of the Albanian diaspora to appreciate and preserve this invaluable legacy.
