Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Albanian Diaspora,
Honored Members of the Pan-Albanian Federation of America VATRA,
Today, we are gathered in spirit across the U.S. and the globe to mark a monumental milestone – the 114th Anniversary of VATRA (The Hearth). For over a century, this sacred institution has served as a beacon of patriotism, guarding our language, identity, and sovereign integrity when the survival of our homeland hung in the balance.
VATRA’s 114-year history reads like the foundational script of modern Albania:
From the first decades of its existence, including the World War I era, when VATRA functioned effectively as an Albanian government-in-exile, defending our national interests on the global stage, to the diplomatic force securing crucial support for Albania’s independence and territorial integrity, to supporting the motherland through hard periods of communism and transition, to being the cultural anchor through its newspaper Dielli, VATRA has been the enduring heartbeat of the nation and the diaspora.
Inspiring Tomorrow
VATRA’s mission remains as vital as ever. The Pan-Albanian Federation bridges the historic diaspora with a modern, Western-oriented global Albanian community. From diplomatic consultations with government and state officials to advocating for the sovereignty and security of Kosovo, the rights of Albanians in Çamëria, Presheva, and all Albanian lands, VATRA continues to strengthen democratic, transatlantic ties.
VATRA’s journey is reflected in the stories of each of its members who honor its ideals and carry out its values of national unity and economic advancement. In each of its decades, VATRA’s leaders and members believed and fought for their convictions, rooted in their love for Albanian lands, language, and culture. As we look toward the future, we honor the sacrifices of the generations before us. Today, our identity as Vatrans and our heritage as Albanian-Americans drive and inspire VATRA’s programs and path forward.
On VATRA’s 114th birthday, let us renew our commitment to support our youth, invest in our communities, and keep the Hearth shining brightly in the next century.
