On Tuesday evening, November 26, a lively reception at New York City Hall followed the flag raising ceremony in downtown earlier today to officially mark the 112 anniversary of Albania’s independence.
Multiple Albanian dignitaries, representatives of Albanian organizations and associations, and many New York Albanians descended upon City Hall to attend a one-and-a-half-hour long program with remarks by the City hosts, honored guests, as well presentations of citations.
Former NY City Council member Mark Gjonaj delivered opening remarks and introduced Kristy Marmorato, City Council Member of District 13 – home to a large Albanian community, which she serves, while “being inspired by them,” she said.
Dr. Pashko Camaj, VATRA Secretary was in attendance. Also Vatra members Pashk Maksuti and Mehill Gjuraj.
The doors, as announced, opened at five in the afternoon, and guests proceeded upstairs to an assortment of traditional Albanian cooking and pastries catered by Dua Gourmet Market. Afterwards, the attendees sat down on the floor and balcony of the Council Chambers, decked with the US, Albanian, Kosova, and the New York State flags.
The three honorees recognized at the flag raising ceremony held earlier just a few blocks down from City Hall, were acknowledged at the reception: Vera Mjeku, Legislative Policy Analyst with the New York City Council, Fadil Berisha, renowned photographer, Esad Gjonbalaj, a prominent activist.
Naser Nika of Staten Island received a citation from David Carr, NY City Council Member, Tina Lula’s proclamation was presented by NY City Council Member Kamillah Hanks. Lastly, Aleksander Nilaj and his volunteers were honored with citations by the Kristy Marmorato.
Appearances by Albanian dance group performers: Nora e Kelmendit, Grupi Barbana and Shkolla Fol Shqip were part of the artistic program.
