The Albanian American Educational Association (AAEA) proudly hosted seven members of Fili Meridiani, an Arbëreshe traditional folklore group from Italy at SUNY- Westchester Community College in Valhalla NY, on October 30th for a presentation celebrating the rich history and culture of Albanians in Italy. This event highlighted the legacy of Albanian settlers who have maintained their traditional language, customs, music, dance, and attire for over 500 years.
“Bringing Fili Meridiani to our community was a unique opportunity to celebrate our shared heritage,” said Jacqueline Kapaj-Vieira, President of at AAEA. “Their presentation not only honors the historical journey of the Arbëreshe but also reinforces the importance of preserving cultural identity across generations.” This diaspora plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting Albanian culture, language, and traditions. Professor Lucrezia Lindia, host and AAEA Vice President, stated “Through initiatives like educational programs, cultural festivals, and through the arts, members of the Albanian diaspora continue to celebrate their heritage, ensuring that the rich traditions of Albania thrive for future generations”.
This event fostered a deeper understanding of the Arbëreshe’s contributions to Italian culture while also emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation in today’s world. Many attending the presentation expressed a newfound appreciation for the richness of traditions that unite the Albanian diaspora.
Fili Meridiani’s performance was a testament to the enduring spirit of the Arbëreshe people, embodying the strength of cultural heritage in the face of time and change.
On November 14th, at the Bronxville Public Library in Bronxville New York, AAEA will be hosting a book release based on the book, The Arbëreshe Women Yesterday, Today Tomorrow….between sacred and profane, that will include the Vorea Association, an international group of speakers who will provide an exhibition of Arbëreshe traditions, artifacts, music and cuisine.
