I have a Dream – 50 Years later/
By: Ermira Babamusta, Ph.D.
Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, that changed America. President Obama, President Bill Clinton and President Jimmy Carter are giving remarks at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.
Today let us remember Martin Luther King Jr. and his nonviolent protest in the Civil Rights Movement. He was a charismatic leader who never stopped dreaming and fighting for a better future. Dr. King’s Dream was for a brighter future and better life for all.His Dream is still alive and creating change today.
America is distinguished for its perfect model of Democracy based on democratic core values like justice, equality, diversity and the common good. I am thankful that today in United States we enjoy freedom and justice for all, a movement also embraced by President Obama. I am glad that President Obama has taken on Dr. King’s Movement in building a just and humane world.
As the nation commemorates “Let Freedom Ring’ and engages in the “Call to Action Bell Ringing” today at 3:00 pm, let us ring our bell for justice, freedom, peace, human rights, compassion for humanity and freedom to prosper. Let us remember a great man and hero Martin Luther King and carry his vision of social justice in our hearts and minds. Let us continue to fight racism, poverty and oppression and stand up for justice and freedom for all!

We all have a heart
That beats for those we love
We all have a mind
That strives for beyond and above
We all stand for what’s right
Even when push comes to shove
We all stand for what we believe in
All willing to fight until we win
We are all the same within
Despite the mere color of our very own skin
From Rosa Parks to Dr. King
Those who risked everything
To make our dreams become reality
For us all to hold hands, rejoice and sing
“Let freedom ring, let freedom ring”
That beats for those we love
We all have a mind
That strives for beyond and above
We all stand for what’s right
Even when push comes to shove
We all stand for what we believe in
All willing to fight until we win
We are all the same within
Despite the mere color of our very own skin
From Rosa Parks to Dr. King
Those who risked everything
To make our dreams become reality
For us all to hold hands, rejoice and sing
“Let freedom ring, let freedom ring”
