Friend of Albania and former British Defence Attaché in Tirana, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mark D Vickers will be exhibiting a number of paintings of Albania in his third solo art exhibition which will be held in Taiwan between 1 – 31 August 2014.
The theme for this exhibition is “Travels in Albania, Nepal, and Taiwan” and amongst the 17 paintings on show are included his depictions of “Legend of Rozafa”, “Road from Shkodra to Vermosh”, “Kelmend”, “Bunkers”, “Kisha e Zoja e Keshillet te Mire, Shkodra, Albania”, and “Montenegro – Looking back towards Albania”.
Whilst to date the British born Mark Vickers style is quite traditional, in fact in all of his paintings are painted with considerable passion. When asked about this he said “I hope to touch people in some way, to reflect something from my own heart, something beyond merely the landscape or figure which I am painting, something deeper.” As people look at his work, each may see or feel different emotions, and this adds to the meaning and value of the paintings. Mark’s feelings of spirituality, of a belief in something more important than simply our mundane existence, are expressed through his paintings.
Unusually this artist always likes to display a short written explanation alongside each painting, to briefly describe it both in terms of physically what is depicted but also, and importantly, a hint of what was in his heart and mind as he painted it – why he painted it, what attracted him to try to capture what he saw and felt. He encourages to read these descriptions as well as looking at his art works as he hopes they may add a deeper dimension to the viewing experience. An example is with his painting of “Road to Vermosh”:-
“Road to Vermosh”
This northern Albanian winding road is the only route linking the beautiful valley and village of Vermosh to the rest of the country. Snow blocks the route for several months each year. Despite the harsh life there, it was always one of my favourite places to spend a weekend a few times a year – no hotels, just relying on the hospitality of the local people and the Albanian motto “Home belongs to God and the guest”.
As I drove along this precarious road it made me think of the twists and turns of life, and the lethal drops to the side reminded me to be mindful of “now” – the past has gone and can’t be changed, and the future has not arrived.
This exhibition focuses on some of the artist’s experiences in these three very different countries, Albania, Nepal and Taiwan, and the thoughts and feelings which they invoked within him.
Z. Vickers says that it is dream for the next year to hold an exhibition in Albania, but the cost of shipping paintings may be prohibitive. He is also currently discussing with an Albanian artist an exciting idea to hold a joint exhibition somewhere.

Miku i Shqipërisë dhe ish-atasheu Britanik i Mbrojtjes në Tiranë, Lejtnant Kolonelit Mark D Vickers do të ekspozoje disa piktura me pamje nga Shqiperia në në ekspozitën e tij të tretë me veprat e tij te artit figurativ qe do te inagurohet në Tajvan ne 1 gusht dhe do te qendroj hapur per 1 muaj nga 1-31 gusht 2014. Tema e kesaj ekspozite është “udhëtimi në Shqipëri, Nepal, dhe Tajvan”, dhe ndermjet 17 pikturave ndodhen “Legjenda e Rozafës”, “Rruga nga Shkodra për në Vermosh”, “Kelmendi”, “Bunkerë”, “Kisha Zoja e Keshillet te Mire, Shkodra”, dhe “Mali i Zi – Duke kthyer në drejtim të Shqipërisë”.
Mark Vickers është mjaft klasik dhe realist ne pikturat e tij, te cilave nuk u mungon emocioni si ne ngjyra dhe ekspresivitet. Ne pikturat e markut ka nje trasparence, elegance dhe nenkuptohet një besim në diçka më të rëndësishme se thjesht ekzistenza ne keste bote qe ndoshta rrjedh nga besimi i tij Budist.
Artistit mendon te japi një shpjegim të shkurtër me shkrim,per admiruesit e artit qe do te vizitojne ekspoziten e tij duke qene se ata nuk kane bere udhetimin fizik qe ka bere artisti. Një shembull është me piktura “Rruga e Vermoshit”: – “Rruga për në Vermosh”
Kjo rruge dredha-dredha ne Shqiperineveriore eshte e vetmja linje qe lidh luginen e mrekullueshme dhe fshatin e vermoshit me pjesen tjeter te vendit. Debora e bllokon rrugen per disa muaj gjate vitit. Megjithe jeten e veshtire aty, kjo zone ka qene gjithnje nje nga vendet e mia te preferuara per te kaluar fundjaven disa here ne vit – pa hotele, thjesht duke u mbeshtetur ne mikpritjen e vendasve dhe shprehjen shqiptare “shtepia I perket zotit dhe mikut”.
Teksa udhetova pergjate asaj rruge te pasigurt, u zhyta ne mendime lidhur me kthesat dhe dredhat e jetes,
Dhe ato humnera vdekjeprurese ne ane te saj me kujtuan qe te jem I vemendshem per te tashmen – e shkuara ka ikur dhe nuk mund te ndryshohet,ndersa e ardhmja nuk ka ardhur ende.
Kjo ekspozitë përqendrohet në disa nga përvojat e artistit në këto tri vende shumë të ndryshme, Shqipëri, Nepal dhe Tajvani, dhe reflekton edhe mendimet dhe ndjenjat e tij.
Z. Vickers thotë se endra e tij per vitin e ardheshem eshte hapja e nje ekspozite ne Shqiperi, Interesante do te ishte per te nje ekspozite kolektive ose me nje artist tjeter Shqiptar.
