The US has developed microwave weapons that experts say can be used to prevent North Korea from launching missiles – by frying their electronics, according to a report.
The weapons — dubbed CHAMPs – can be fitted into cruise missiles launched by B-52 bombers to fly into enemy airspace at low altitudes and emit pulses of microwave energy to zap electronic systems.
“These high-powered microwave signals are very effective at disrupting and possibly disabling electronic circuits,” Mary Lou Robinson, who leads development of CHAMP at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque, told NBC News.
The weapons were discussed during an August meeting at the White House related to the Hermit Kingdom, two officials with direct knowledge told the network.
Two Air Force officials told NBC that CHAMP, which is not currently in operation, could be ready for use quickly — possibly within days.
Advocates say CHAMP — which stands for Counter-electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project — can target the ground controls and the circuitry in the rogue regime’s missiles.
“Think about when you put something in your microwave that has metal on it,” said Sen. Martin Heinrich ( D-N.M.), a member of the Armed Services Committee who began his career as an engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque.
“You know how badly that goes? Imagine directing those microwaves at someone’s electronics,” he said.
