By: Megan Dougherty/November 25, 2013, New York, NY – Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Assemblymember Mark Gjonaj and former Assemblymember Stephen Kaufman joined together with the Albanian-American Society Foundation and the Sons and Daughters of Albania in America today to honor four distinguished individuals in memoriam for their contributions to the cause of Albanian and Kosovar Independence. The celebration recognized the achievements of Zahir Pajaziti, the co-founder of the Kosova Liberation Army, Bajram Curri, an activist and military hero who gave his life to protect the Albanian state, Hasan Prishtina, former Prime Minister of Albania, and Ibrahim Rugova, the first President of Kosova and arguably the most powerful leader in the country’s history. Borough President Stringer honored each of these leaders by issuing a special proclamation in their name and declaring a “day of celebration in the borough of Manhattan.”
“The courage and conviction these honorees showed in the face of oppression and adversity was not only inspiring, but vital in enabling Albania to become the trusted and true International partner it is today,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer. “I am proud New York can boast the largest Albanian-American population in the United States. Our neighborhoods are enriched by this great diversity, and the community’s wealth of economic, cultural and civic contributions.”
“I am proud to celebrate the 101st anniversary of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. The Albanian community in the Bronx is growing both in population and in influence and they are among the most hard working people in our Borough,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “The Bronx is a place of many diverse cultures and heritages, and the Albanians have taken their place as business owners, leaders and contributing members of our society. I am so happy to celebrate this important date in history with my friends in the Albanian-American community.”
“As Albanians prepare to celebrate our 101st Anniversary as independent, we recognize the significant contributions we’ve made in the United States and throughout the world,” said Assemblymember Mark Gjonaj. “It is a privilege as an Albanian-American to be able to celebrate our history and culture, while embracing our new home in America. I encourage Albanians to continue to be productive members of society and continuing working to make the world a better more tolerant place.”
“On this momentous occasion, the 101st anniversary of the independence of Albania from the Ottoman Empire, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer is once again honoring our community,” said Esad Rizai, Founder of the Albanian American Society Foundation. “Scott M. Stringer has consistently shown his dedication to our people in America, Albania and around the world. We know he proudly stands beside us as we celebrate this great day. In the spirit of Besa and our forefathers, we express our sincere gratitude and thanks.”
