Paul Kurti and Amina Zhaman win AFW Top Prize for “Right to Love” movie

New York – Albanian-Canadian director Paul Kurti and writer, producer, actor Amina Zhaman won this year’s top prize at the official competition of Albanian Film Week International Film Festival (AFW), taking away the Best Feature Film Prize Audience Award for “Right to Love” film. Pavlina Mani, who also starred in this film walked off with the biggest prize “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The prizes were presented by the honorable Bekim Sejdiu, Consul from the Consulate General of the Republic of Kosovo in New York at the popular Producers Club Theatres on the final Awards Night, Thursday, November 14, 2013.

“I’d like to congratulate the organizers of the Albanian Film Week, especially Mrika Krasniqi and Ariot Myrtaj, for successfully braining the festival to New York City for yet another year. It is an important event that encourages and showcases the work of Albanian artists from all around the world.

We are thrilled that “Right to Love” received the Audience Award for Best Feature Film. We thank the New York audiences for supporting the film.

I’d like to congratulate all the cast and crew of the film, starting with the lead actors Amina Zhaman and Shpend Xani. Also, thank you to the producer Marina Bolotokova of Oriental Pearl LLC for making the film possible.

Right to Love is written and produced by the multi-talented Amina Zhaman, who also starred as lead female. The film is directed by the great Paul Kurti, produced by the visionary Marina Bolotokova of Oriental Pearl LLC with the talented Gunthar Ross as director of photography. The film features a superb talented cast, Shpend Xani, lead actor as Tony, Luan Bexheti as Eduarto, Omar Chaparro as Henry and Pavlina Mani as Maviola. During the Award Ceremony, Amina Zhaman said that this was a team success and thanked Paul Kurti for saying yes to the script and stated that “the success of this film is based on a great script, great cast, great cameraman work, great director and of course best producer Marina Bolotokova”. Amina Zhaman also thanked the sponsors of the film, Kanshobi Azhakhov and Sergey Doev, for believing in her and “gave a chance to show Albanian and Circassian cultures to the world and make it an international story and an internationally acclaimed film”.

Luan Bexheti, Praq Rado and Bukurije Navon walked the Red Capet Gala Premiere as Celebrity Guest of Honor at the Albanian Film Week that took place on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the SVA Theatres. Shpend Xani, Luan Bexheti, Pavlina Mani, Ariot Myrtaj and Nereida Isufi were present at the final Awards Ceremony night that took place at Producers Club Theatres on November 14, 2013 and accepted the award along with Amina Zhaman for Right to Love movie, as winner of Audience Award for Best Feature Film at Albanian Film Week. The cast received a second honor for the legendary Pavlina Mani, awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Amina Zhaman also thanked Alfred Tollja, owner of Producers Club Theatres who introduced her to most of cast of Right to Love and showed great support and help during the movie production. Alfred Tollja said that he was very impressed with Amina and was happy to help and recommend talented Albanian actors for this film. Alfred wished Amina and the cast further success. Andrew Thomas, a great supporter of the film and friend of producer Amina Zhaman was also present and acknowledged by Amina at the final night of AFW for his continued support. Amina Zhaman also thanked Halil Mula, Qazim Doda for their immense support and Ermira Babamusta for “being a good will ambassador” for Albanian culture and bringing international awareness to the film from Canada, US, Kosovo, Macedonia, Prague, etc.

Out of Sight, a documentary by Paul Kurti

After directing the successful feature film “Right to Love” award-winning filmmaker Paul Kurti shot his next project “Out of Sight” in Albania. Out of Sight is a docuementary told from the perspective of Albanian children how they understand their world, reflecting on the future of Albanian and present lifestyles.

Director Kurti explains that his interest on the society of tomorrow from the eyes of the new generation is what inspired him to make this project.

“I was born in Albania and left in the year 2000, after living through the 90s, a confused decade of transitions for the country and the Albanian society. Every time I visit Albania, I see a lot of aesthetic changes. However, I still find the same confusion about the future as before.

Thus, I decided to make a film, about children who were born after I left the country. Children that did not live through the fall of communism and rise of democracy of the early 90s; the pyramid schemes and rebellion of the mid 90s; or the Kosovo war of the late 90s.

I wanted to explore what it means to be an Albanian child in the new millennium. And since these children are the future of the country, we could get a glimpse into the society of tomorrow,” said director Paul Kurti.

Director Paul Kurti hopes that with this documentary people can learn more about the social conditions of Albania facing youth. The documentary delves into issues like education, poverty, environment and future prospects as seen and understood from the eyes of children.

“I hope that after watching this film, audiences will become more aware that there is so much we can learn from these children. Concepts such as education, order, cleanliness and poverty, become so much more powerful through their voices.

While working on the film, I came across some situations that I was not aware of. On the suburbs of Tirana I saw extreme poverty. Children that were forced to leave school at a younger age because their parents could not afford to buy them books and clothes for school. We show the story of a girl in a similar situation in the documentary. Her parents had removed her from school in grade 4 and she had been sitting at home for the last 4 years. In the meanwhile, her 3 younger sisters were also being removed from school once they got to grade 4. I had never met a child that spoke about school with such passion as her. It was all she has been thinking for the last 4 years, while slowly realizing that she might never get another chance at education.

There are many similar stories that are untold and that people in bigger cities are seldom aware of. That is why I titled the film “Out of Sight,” added Paul Kurti.

Flitet për personalitet famoze dhe vipat që do marrin pjesë në këtë premierë.Skenari u shkrua nga aktorja dhe producentja e njohur Amina Zhaman, me origjinë Çerkeze, nga Kaukazi Verior. Filmi është i pari produksion rus i një filmi amerikan në anglisht. Filmi ka dhe dialog në shqip dhe shumica e aktorëve janë emra të njohur të kinematografisë shiptare dhe të huaj. “Më kontaktoi Amina pasi kishte dëgjuar dhe parë filmat e mi të shkurtër. Ajo kishte shkruar njëskenar dhe muzikën për një film, një histori mjaft personale për të. Një nga personazhet kryesore të filmit është shqiptaro-amerikan dhe meqe dhe une jam nga Shqipëria mund ta kuptoja më mirë këtë kulturë,” shpjegon regjizori Paul Kurti.

Paul Kurti ështënjë regjizor shqiptaro-kanadez. Nipi i aktores shqiptare Tinka Kurti, ai rritet me një interes të thellë në forma shprehëse vizuale, duke përfshirë vizatimin, arkitekturën dhe filmin. Ka studiuar regji në New York Film Academy. Ka krijuar disa video muzikë dhe filma të shkurtër, duke përfshirë fimin “Restless Wanderer” me tëcilin ka fituar cmimin YOBI Film. Filmat e tij janë shfaqur nëfestivale si WILDsound (Kanada), Dreambox (Japoni), Tirana International Film Festival (Shqiperi) etj. Cila është historia e filmit “Right to Love” (E Drejta Për të Dashuruar)?

Paul Kurti: Filmi tregon historinë e Aminës (Amina Zhaman), një aktore Çerkeze-muslimane, e cila shkon në New York me ambicie për të interpretuar në skenat e Broadway. Ajo bie në dashuri me Tonin (Shpend Xani), një biznesmen Shqiptaro-Katolik, por familja e tij nuk e pranon dhe mundohet ta prishë lidhjen e tyre.

Në sipërfaqe duket si një histori moderne e Romeo dhe Xhulietës, por ka shumë elemente që e bëjnë këtë histori të veçantë dhe unike. Filmi bën shumë pyetje – sa jemi ne të gatshëm të sakrifikojmë për të ndjekur ëndrrat tona? Do sakrifikonim familjen, karrierën, dashurine tonë? Pse disa njerëz vazhdojnë të gjykojnë të tjerët në bazë të kombësisë dhe të fesë së tyre? A është një mentalitet grupi apo ndryshon në çdo individ nëbazë të përvojes së tyre? Do ndryshojnë ndonjëherë këto paragjykime?

Historitë që më interesojnë mua janë ato të cilat nuk japin përgjigje, por bëjnë pyetje. Unë përpiqem të analizoj një histori nga të gjitha pikpamjet e personazheve, madje edhe atyre që s’janë pozitive. Më pas është në dorë të publikut të formulojë mendime në bazë të çfarë u paraqit në ekran. Nëse filmi nxit bisedime, atëherë për mua ka arritur sukses.

Ku është xhiruar filmi?

Paul Kurti: Filmi u xhirua nëNew York gjatë verës së vitit 2012. U deshën përafërsisht 2 muaj përgatitje, 6 javë filmime dhe 5 muaj montazh. New Yorku është qyteti ku personazhi kryesor vjen meëndrrën për të interpretuar në Broadway, dhe është gjithashtu njëqytet që është ndërtuar mbi ëndrrat dhe punën e brezave të shumtë të emigrantëve nga prejardhjet e kombësi të ndryshme. Ky qytet është i përshtatshëm për këtë film.

Flisni për zgjedhjen e aktorëve

Paul Kurti: Amina Zhaman shkroi historinë dhe gjithashtu interpreton rolin kryesor. Në audicionet për rolin e Tonit, provuam disa aktore të ndryshëm, por kur pamë Shpend Xanin, menduam se ishte zgjedhja më e përshtatme per rolin. Interpretimi i Shpendit është ndryshe nga Toni i skenarit, ai ka një prani shumë më intensive nëekran. Megjithatë, mendova se ishtë një ide interesante për personazhin, dhe kam kaluar mjaft kohëme Shpendin duke folur dhe përpunuar Tonin.

Theodore Buloukos luan rolin e John Fisher, producenti që ndihmon Aminën të interpretojë në skenë. Ai eshte njëaktor me shumë përvojë dhe mjaft profesional dhe ishte një kënaqësi të punoja me të. Aktorë të tjerë janë Luan Bexheti, Omar Chaparro, Ariot Myrtaj, Karina Ivanova dhe shumëtë tjerë. Meqë ishte një film indipendent, dhe koha dhe buxheti ishin të kufizuar, shpesh nuk kemi pasur shume kohëpër prova. Por të gjithë aktorët e filmit e kuptuan këtë sfidë shfaqën gjithë aftësitë e tyre para kamerës.

Çfarë momentesh të veçanta të filmit ju kanë lënë mbresa?

Paul Kurti: Skena kur Toni ballafaqohet me nënën e tij Maviola, më ka ngelur në mendje. Kam qenë me fat sepse kam pasur mundësi të punoj me Pavlina Manin, një aktore e madhe qëkam parë dhe admiruar në televizor. Mendoj se Pavlina Mani dhe Shpend Xani interpretojnëmarrëdhënien nënë-bir në një mënyrë shumë të fuqishme dhe të ndershëm. Mendoj se përvojat e tyre personale i kanë ndihmuar gjatë interpretimit të kësaj skene. Ështënjë skenë intensive, ku publiku herëe përbuz dhe herë e mëshiron personazhin e Maviolës. Kjo ishte njënga skenat e pakta që kam shkruar dhe jam shumë krenar për rezultatin përfundimtar.

Cilë është pjesa juaj e preferuar e regjisë?

Paul Kurti: Deri mësot, mendoj se akoma s’kam gjetur diçka tjetër që më bën të ndihem vetvetja aq sa kur po bëj një film. Regjia ështe si të gjesh elementet e përshtatshme për të zgjidhur njëmister, ama të gjithat elementet duhet t’i përshtaten skenarit dhe filmit. Kjo përfshin vendet, aktorët, dialogun, lëvizjen e kamerës etj. Gjithashtu besoj se filmi është i përbërë nga ato momente të papritura dhe të paplanifikuara që ndodhin gjatë xhirimeve. Mund tëjetë një ide, një fjali e re, një vend interesant, etj. Një regjizor duhet të jetë i aftër t’i kuptojë këto momente dhe t’i përdorë për të mirën e filmit. Mua më peëlqejnë mjaft këto sfida. Megjithatë, sado që më pëlqen filmimi, mendoj se montazhi është vendi ku krijohet “magjia” e filmit, dhe gjithmonë e pres me padurim perjudhën e montazhit.

Çfarë projektesh keni për të ardhmen?

Paul Kurti: Kam shkruar dy filma me metrazh të gjatë, dhe jam duke kërkuar financime për t’i xhiruar. Tregojnë histori njerëzish që për arsye të ndryshme janë disi të izoluar nga shoqëria. Ne të gjithe njohim njerëz të tillë, mund të jetë ai fqinji i çuditshëm që banon në kat të fundit, me tëcilin nuk i kemi folur kurrë, por unë besoj se çdo person ka një histori interesante qe ja vlen të tregohet. Kjo është gjithashtu arsyeja pse mëinteresojnë dhe filmat dokumentare, dhe ndoshta një ditë me një subjekt dhe histori tëpërshtatshme, do mund të bëj një dokumentar (http://paulkurti.com).
