….Redaksia e Diellit njofton bashkatdhetarët se ka ndërruar jetë veprimtari i njohur i komunitetit shqiptar në SHBA, ish kryetar i degës se VATRES së Nju Jorkut, dr. Selahedin Velaj. Z. Velaj është një ndër shqiptarët nacionalist që u largua nga Shqipëria fare i ri, pas Luftës së II Botërore. Familja e tij nga Kanina e Vlorës kaloi kalvarin e burgjeve komuniste.
Fillimisht z. Velaj kaloi në kampet e refugjatëve në Itali dhe më pas erdhi në SHBA. Gjatë të gjithë jetës ai ishte një shembull i vyer për bashkadhetarët, si pikë orientimi për t’i shërbyer cështjes kombëtare. Në Amerikë ai u lidh ngushtë me Federatën Vatra dhe ishte jo vetëm pjesmarrës por edhe organizator dhe udhëheqës i veprimtarive të Vatrës, kryesisht të degës së Nju Jorkut, ndër më aktivet e Federatës.
Selahedin Velaj ishte një ndër pjestarët e delegacionit të Vatrës, që vendosi ura komunikimi mes arëbëreshve të Italisë dhe Shqiptarëve të Amerikës. Më 1968 ai së bashku me kryetarin e Vatrës Peter Chiko, Anthony Athanas, dr. Hamdi Uruci dhe të tjerë ishin të ftuarit e vëllezërve të gjakut, arbëreshëve të Italisë me rastin e vendosjes së bustit të heroit Kombëtar në 500 vjetorin e heroit Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbe në Romë, veprimtari që shënoi dhe lidhjet mes dy diasporave.
Një vit më pas , nëntor 1969, me rastin e 60 vjetorit të Gazetës Dielli, organ i Vatrës, dr. Velaj ishte pjesë e komisionit të festimeve. Është pikërisht kjo ngjarje festive, që shënoi kulmin e bashkëpunimit mes shqiptarëve të Amerikës dhe arbëreshëve. Një delegacion i madh prej arbëreshëve udhëtoi me Al Italian drejt Bostonit me 20 nëntor 1969, ku për ditë te tëra u zhvilluan veprimtari të përbashkëta, si në Katedralen e Shën Gjergjit, tek vendvarrimi i Fan S Nolit dhe Faik Konicës, Pier Four i famshem i Antoni Athanas,e deri tek veprimtaritë e kulmore të Nju Jorkut, ku përvec një seminari shkencor historik, u oroganizuan edhe ekspozita piktures me dy korifejtë e pikturës shqiptare, Ibrahim Kodra e Lin Delia, një paradë fanatastike e shqiptarëve të Amerikës dhe arbëreshëve, ku ranë në sy veshjet e bukura arbëreshe dhe të trevave shqiptare, paradë që nisi nga Rockfeler Center deri Katedralen e famshme të St Patrikut, veprimtaritë e përbashkëta fetare në Katedrale, dhe finalja u shënua me darkën përmbyllse, ku morën pjesë më shumë se 1000 vetë. Meritë në këtë veprimtari kishte edhe dr. Selahedin Velaj, që ishte pjesë e delegacionit.
Dr. Velaj njihet edhe për aktet e veta të bamirësisë si dhe përkrahjen që u ka dhënë shqiptarëve në nevojë apo përkrahjen që i ka dhënë brezi të tri. Ai ishte pjesë e shumë veprimtarive kulturore kombëtare mes shqiptarve.Ikja nga kjo jetë e dr. Selahedin Velaj është një humbje jo vetëm për bashkshorten e tij dhe djalin, por për të gjithë shqiptarët.

Ascend Educational Fund awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 to immigrant students and children of immigrants who are graduating from a New York City high school to attend public or private colleges and universities, regardless of ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status.
Eligibility Requirements
• Must be born outside the United States or have two parents born outside the United States
• Must be a graduating senior at a high school in the five boroughs of New York City
• Must enroll full-time at an accredited public or private college or university in 2015-2016
Application Materials
• Completed and signed application form
• Official high school transcript
• Copy of SAT or ACT score report
• Two letters of recommendation
• Two essays
Selection Criteria and Process
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on qualities traditionally valued and demonstrated by the immigrant community: hard work, resourcefulness, perseverance in the face of adversity, academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to one’s community. A committee will review applications and select a group of finalists for interviews.
December 3, 2014: Applications open online
March 19, 2015: Application materials due (ALL materials listed above)
May 6-7, 2015: Finalists notified
May 16/17, 2015: Interviews for Finalists
May 20, 2015: Scholarship Recipients notified
Applications must be submitted by the Thursday, March 19, 2015 11:59 PM EST deadline.
Scholarship Conditions
Scholarships will be disbursed directly to the recipient’s educational institution in equal installments over a two or four year period, depending on the type of institution. Failure to comply with the following conditions may result in the suspension or revocation of scholarship awards:
• Enroll full-time at an accredited public or private college or university
• Remain in good standing and maintain a 2.5 grade point average
• Submit progress reports to Ascend Educational Fund every semester
• Participate in mentoring provided by Ascend Educational Fund

Our community is experiencing a surge of flu cases flooding the Emergency Rooms of all of our local hospitals, creating long wait times and crowded conditions. Additionally, this backlog puts those who are seeking medical treatment for other conditions at risk of contracting the flu while awaiting care.
To decrease the number of Emergency Room cases, our local hospitals have asked us to ask for your cooperation. They suggest that you take the following actions if you feel you may have contracted the flu virus:
1. Get a flu shot. Flu shots are widely available at your doctor’s office, urgent care centers and local pharmacies.
2. If you have flu-like symptoms, call your primary care provider (PCP) immediately. They will do an initial triage and may be able to recommend treatment immediately and effectively.
3. Avoid the Emergency Room if at all possible, unless a doctor tells you otherwise. If you cannot go to your PCP, consider going to an urgent care center or other walk-in clinics. The waiting times at urgent care centers is often much shorter than the Emergency Room, and they are fully equipped to handle a variety of illnesses and injuries, including the flu.
With your help, we can reduce the case loads and waiting times at Emergency Rooms in our borough and reduce the risk of spreading the flu.
