Tirana Open Day Defender Europe 2021

On Sunday Albania and US Armed Forces presented their military capabilities as part of an Open Day event at the Mother Teresa Square in Tirana. “Defender Europe 21” is one of the largest military exercise in the Western Balkans. The event was attended by US Ambassador Yuri Kim, Prime Minister Rama and President Meta. In her remarks, Ambassador Yuri Kim said that despite our differences, “I believe that the success of ‘Defender Europe 21’ reflects the commitment of the people of Albania, you all acknowledge that we are at an important moment in history and you are all united in our relationship.” 

Ambassador Kim said that “Defender Europe 21” will further strengthen the relationship between the two countries, while underlining that the US will always support Albania. She underlined that “the relationship between Americans and Albanians should be valued above all else.” 

The US Army reports that DEFENDER-Europe 21 activities begin this month across Europe and continue through June. DEFENDER-Europe is an annual large-scale U.S. Army Europe and Africa-led, multinational, joint exercise designed to build strategic and operational readiness and interoperability between U.S., NATO allies and partners. More than 30,000 multinational forces from 27 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in a dozen countries.

This year, DEFENDER-Europe 21 will also include significant involvement of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. The exercise will utilize key ground and maritime routes bridging Europe, Asia and Africa. The exercise will incorporate new or high-end capabilities including air and missile defense assets, as well as assets from the U.S. Army Security Force Assistance Brigades and the recently reactivated V Corps.

Remarks by Ambassador Yuri Kim at the Tirana Open Day of Defender 2021 Military Exercise 

President Meta, Prime Minister Rama, Ministers and Generals, Mr. Basha, men and women in uniform, dear friends,

What a beautiful day to showcase our militaries and Exercise Defender Europe 2021, which is the largest U.S.-led military exercise ever seen in the Western Balkans!

This is landmark moment for U.S.-Albanian cooperation in defense. It is also a landmark moment for the NATO Alliance. The Exercise is well underway now, and it is shaping up to be a huge success. Defender 21 has been a military success.

In the past weeks, soldiers from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Romania, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States have been training together to strengthen our readiness, capabilities, and interoperability so that NATO Allies and Partners can accomplish any mission on land, across the sea, and in the air.

Our readiness, capabilities, and interoperability ensure that we can deter conflict, preserve peace, and keep our nations safe. Additionally, Defender 21 has laid the groundwork for even stronger cooperation in the years ahead. I have had the opportunity to visit many of the training sites in Albania. At every site, the first thing I see is Albanians and Americans working together and getting to know each other. The professional and personal relationships forming now transcend military training – they strengthen our ties.

Our soldiers in uniform feel exactly the same way that we diplomats in suits feel about this country: They marvel at Albania’s beauty, they appreciate the warm hospitality of the Albanian people, and they are proud that the United States calls Albania a friend and Ally. As friends and Allies, U.S. and Albanian soldiers have been at each other’s side in numerous conflicts, from Kosovo to Afghanistan to Iraq and beyond.

And we know from those experiences that America has a true and courageous friend in Albania. Defender 21 opens an exciting new path to greater strategic cooperation. This path will see U.S. soldiers returning to Albania to train, build partnerships, and make friends for life. I believe the success of Defender 21 reflects the commitment of the leaders and people of Albania. We appreciate that, regardless of the differences that may divide people from time to time, you recognize that we are at an important moment in history, and all of you are united in your agreement with all of us on the value and importance of an even stronger relationship between the United States and Albania, between Americans and Albanians.

Defender 21 comes as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the end of communist dictatorship, the beginning of democracy in Albania, and the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Albania. It also comes a hundred years after the United States stood with you in your just demand for an independent Albania. We stand with you today, in strong support and solidarity for a democratic, independent, strong Albania.

We will continue to stand with you as you undertake the difficult tasks now necessary to achieve Albania’s full potential. These tasks are difficult but not impossible. And even if they were impossible, if anyone can defy the odds, it is the people of Albania. You’ve done it time and again throughout the history, and I have to say I am deeply moved to be standing here, in Albania, and looking straight down to Skanderbeg square, to the statue of your hero, someone who should be a hero for all of us, as a symbol of unity, as a symbol of courage, perseverance, and vision. I am proud to be with you here today, we’re proud to be with you as allies, today, tomorrow, krah per krah, always.

A book Review- Mother Teresa – Saint of the Peripheries

Dr. Ines  A. Murzaku’s newest book on Mother Teresa is a very good and  an enjoyable read. Though for us Albanians many facts of the Saint’s life are known, there are more to learn.

But what is more important, it is the essence of the book and the deep look into the new title given to this Saint by the author as ” The Saint of the Peripheries”.  A very fitting one!

We all are familiar with the saint’s deeds, in general, and we are familiar with her dark night and her never giving up, for the Love of God. She knew Jesus’ thirst, she knew his wounds and she tended to them.

This is very impressive and unmatchable by us, mere mortals here on Earth. 

But then the reader comes across not another biography of the most famous and beloved Albanian saint, but a fine scientific study, where the Albanian DNA of Mother Teresa is looked into detail from a very different angle and in a new light, like never seen before. That light on the Albanian blood and the formation as an Albanian young woman, doesn’t mean that other nations do not have their favorite grandma being just like a  “mother Teresa” of their own, but the very fact of an interfaith culture of the small country of origin, where everyone cares for the other in a special, unique way, Mother Teresa learned as a little child to serve everyone and love everyone for the love of God. To her, everyone was the same in dignity and value, she saw with the eyes of Christ, and she witnessed what her parents did. 

And she reached out to everyone first at home to prepare for the future noble, saintly mission. 

The book is a rich study and it takes time to read and think about it. Each chapter is a study on its own and the way it is written includes storytelling and analysis, combining them so well, that the reader doesn’t want to stop reading.  

The theology of the peripheries is examined in the prologue. And it gives the reader a general idea of how fitting this definition -Saint of Peripheries-   is for Mother Teresa’s spirituality and deeds.

The book has three major parts. Dr. Murzaku’s steady study and presentation of Mother Teresa’s journey begins with her personal peripheries, how was she formed, who was she before the world met her as Mother Teresa, what did her trajectory looks like, what was the political life of her time, language, faith tradition of her neighbors and more. In the first part she includes the beginning of her  call, describes Our Lady of  Letnica  family  devotion to the School of Periphery , furthers the mission in India and touches on Spiritual Darkness . All of those aspects are looked at in depth and explained.

I recall the unease I have had with even some Albanian authors who question the motives of the saint to go to India. But when you read this book, it is clear as the light of the day, that God called Mother Teresa to the peripheries and she obliged. She, imitating our lady, gave her fiat too. Reading about the Spiritual Darkness of the Saint, one can’t help but think. It is a fitting aspect of the peripheries. Her white martyrdom was real, God felt distant for her, and she accepted it as a gift.

The Second Part of The book deals with the Mystical peripheries. 

It is such an inspiring part of the book. I recall Fr. Michael Gaitly’s book on 33 Days of Consecration to Mary where he examines a part of Mother Teresa’s Marian spirituality and feels really good that she is studied along with Sts. John Paul the Second and Maximilian Kolbe. But Dr. Murzaku’s study goes so deep and her analogies are so beautiful that one can not distinguish who is Mother Teresa’s mystical better match for certain aspects. Is it St. Francis, Saint Benedict, Saint John Paul the Second, St Padre Pio? All very well explained.

And then the last part explains the contemporary peripheries and of course, it goes to the heart of the matter. Because it is Pope Francis who resurrected the theology of the periphery and Mother Teresa’s life and work is just about that. It is like a little discovery found in plain sight but somehow not seen or talked as much about it.  But now we have a well written and very well received book and I am so glad that a sister in blood (Albanian) wrote it. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Konjufca: Për masakrën e Dubravës duhet një gjyq i veçantë

Kryetari i Kuvendit të Republikës së  Kosovës Glauk Konjufca, i shoqëruar nga nënkryetarja Saranda Bogujevci, deputetë të Kuvendit dhe anëtarë të Qeverisë mori pjesë në përvjetorin e masakrës së Dubravës dhe vendosi lule pranë lapidarit të ngritur në kujtim të të rënëve në këtë masakër, të kryer nga forcat serbe këtu e 22 vjet më parë, gjatë së cilës u vranë e u plagosën qindra të burgosur shqiptarë. 
Kryetari Konjufca me këtë rast tha se  trashëgimia e vetme e Serbisë në Kosovë është gjenocidi mbi popullin shqiptar të Kosovës. 
Sipas kryekuvendarit njëra prej këtyre akteve të gjenocidit është edhe masakra e Dubravës. 
“Ky është një akt i planifikuar, i përgatitur dhe i ekzekutuar nga shteti serb. Dihet se cilat struktura të ushtrisë dhe policisë serbe, të grupeve paramilitare kanë qenë të angazhuara drejpërdrejt në masakrën e Dubravës. Pra, sa i përket pyetjes dhe çështjes se kush janë përgjegjësit që vranë të burgosurit në burgun e Dubravës prej 19 maj deri më 23 maj 1999, askush në botë nuk ka dyshim. Përgjegjësia i mbetet Serbisë, kriminelët me emër dhe mbiemër dihen, por deri më tani ka munguar vetëm drejtësia”, tha Konjufca. 
Kryetari i Kuvendit përsëriti se pa vënien e drejtësisë për të vrarët dhe të masakruarit në Kosovë, familjarët nuk do të mund të ndjehen  të qetë.
Prandaj, shtoi kryekuvendari Konjufca, institucionet çdo ditë duhet t’i publikojnë me emra dhe mbiemra të gjithë ata policë, ushtarë dhe paramilitarë që kanë marrë pjesë në masakrën e burgut të Dubravës. 
“Kjo është një prej masakrave që kërkon një gjykim të veçantë”, tha ai. 
Me rastin e 22 vjetorit të maskrës në burgun e Dubravës, Kryekuvendari Konjufca bashkë me nënën e dëshmorit Bajram Kiçina, Mihrije Kiçina, nënkryetaren e Kuvendit Saranda Bogujevci, ministren e Drejtësisë Albulena Haxhiu, të mbijetuarit e kësaj masakre Nait Hasani, Bislim Zogaj, Bajrush Xhemajli, si dhe kryetarin e PDK-së Enver Hoxhaj dhe atë të AAK-së Ramush Haradinaj, zbuluan lapidarin në të cilin janë shkruar emrat e të vrarëve, të plagosurve dhe të mbijetuarve të kësaj masakre të tmerrshme. 
Po sot kryetari Konjufca bëri homazhe dhe vendosi lule edhe pranë pllakës përkujtimore në Vushtrri, në nderim të 68 të rënëve, të cilët 22 vjet më parë u vranë e u masakruan brenda një dite nga forcat ushtarake, policore e paramilitare serbe. 
Në bashkëbisedim me familjarët e të rënëve, kryekuvendari Konjufca u zotua se do të angazhohen në përgatitjen e një padie për gjenocid ndaj Serbisë.
