Dje, në pritjen e organizuar në nder të Kongresmenit Eliot Engel, pata kënaqësinë të takohem me Presidentin Bill Clinton dhe bashkëshorten e tij, ish-Sekretaren e Shtetit Hillary Clinton, të cilët erdhën për ngushëllime.
Folëm për miqësinë e shtrenjtë shqiptaro-amerikane dhe kujtuam fundin e viteve 90, kur së bashku me Kongresmenin Engel dhe shumë miq tanë në Washington angazhoheshim ditë e natë për lirinë dhe pavarësinë e Kosovës. Presidenti Clinton më tregoi se si, në atë periudhë, Kongresmeni Engel po ushtronte trysni të vazhdueshme ndaj administratës së tij për çështjen e Kosovës dhe theksoi se ishim me fat që, së bashku, arritëm të bënim ndryshimin për popullin e Kosovës. Presidentin Clinton e falënderova në emër të kombit tonë që na qëndroi pranë, duke i dhënë fund regjimit serb të Millosheviqit dhe duke çliruar Kosovën.
Pa miqtë tanë në Washington, Kosova nuk do të ishte këtu ku është sot: një shtet i lirë dhe i pavarur.
Në këtë pritje ngushëllimesh u takova edhe me familjarë dhe miq të nderuar të Kongresmenit Engel, si Kryetari i Yonkers-it Mike Spano, biznesmeni shqiptaro-amerikan Lewis Gjelaj, John dhe Maria Calvelli, Bill Weitz, gazetari dhe botuesi i gazetës “Illyria”, Vehbi Bajrami, si dhe shumë të tjerë.
Me punën e tij të jashtëzakonshme, Kongresmeni Engel ka hyrë në zemrat e shumë njerëzve në mbarë botën. Ne, shqiptarët, ishim me fat që e kishim një mik si ai—një zë të fortë dhe të palëkundur në momentet më vendimtare të historisë sonë.
Zoti e bekoftë Kongresmenin Engel, familjen Engel, popullin amerikan dhe popullin shqiptar.

Yesterday, at the reception held in honor of Congressman Eliot Engel, I had the pleasure of meeting President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who had come to offer their condolences.
We spoke about the enduring Albanian-American friendship and reflected on the late 1990s, when together with Congressman Engel and many of our friends in Washington, we worked day and night for the freedom and independence of Kosova. President Clinton shared how, during that period, Congressman Engel applied consistent pressure on his administration regarding the issue of Kosova, and emphasized that we were fortunate that, together, we were able to make a difference for the people of Kosova. I thanked President Clinton on behalf of our nation for standing by us and helping bring an end to the Serbian regime of Milosevic, leading to the liberation of Kosova.
Without our friends in Washington, Kosova would not be where it is today: a free and independent country.
At this gathering, I also had the opportunity to meet with family members and respected friends of Congressman Engel, including Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Albanian-American businessman Lewis Gjelaj, John and Maria Calvelli, Bill Weitz, journalist and owner of the newspaper “Illyria,” Vehbi Bajrami, as well as many others.
Through his extraordinary work, Congressman Engel has touched the hearts of people around the world. We Albanians were fortunate to have a friend like him—a strong and unwavering voice during the most decisive moments of our history.
