As a lawyer who has observed 13 years of Edi Rama’s governance, I have been increasingly troubled by his cavalier approach to the rule of law and constitutional order.
It began with the repeated resort to normative acts in matters that required parliamentary legislation. It continued with laws that raised serious questions of constitutionality and, in some instances, appeared to contradict not only the spirit of the Constitution but its very text, leaving the Constitutional Court to rule on their constitutionality.
Now, we are witnessing another deeply troubling development: RENEA, Albania’s specialised intervention unit, trained and equipped for high-risk operations, including wartime scenarios, has been deployed in the streets of Tirana as students take to the streets to protest.
The principle of proportionality? Thrown out of the window.
The right to peaceful protest, the limits of state power and the proportionality of police intervention are not matters of political convenience. They are fundamental principles of a constitutional democracy.
I stand with the students of Tirana demanding a new system of governance, one founded on accountability, the rule of law and respect for the democratic will of the people.
KOHA JUAJ KA MBARUAR, EDI RAMA!
